Facts About East Harlem

East Harlem, also known as Spanish Harlem or El Barrio and historically known as Italian Harlem, is a neighborhood of Upper Manhattan, New York City, roughly encompassing the area north of the Upper East Side and bounded by 96th Street to the south, Fifth Avenue to the west, and the East and Harlem Rivers to the east and north.

The community is notable for its contributions to Latin freestyle and salsa music. It also includes the area formerly known as Italian Harlem, in which remnants of an once predominantly Italian community remain.

East Harlem is a neighborhood in New York City, NY with an incredible population of 121K. In this area, you will find bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and parks.

West Harlem is one of the safest neighborhoods in New York City, with just 48 crimes per 10 thousand residents.

The 2019 population density of East Harlem is 5800 people per square mile. This means that there are an average of 111 452 residents in this area, accounting for 35 921 Asian individuals (including those who identify as Hispanic or white), 35.9% Blacks, 43 000 Hispanics & 14 300 whites.

63%

The racial makeup of the neighborhood was 9.5% (11,322) White, 63% (74,735) African American, 0.3% (367) Native American, 2.4% (2,839) Asian, 0% (46) Pacific Islander, 0.3% (372) from other races, and 2.2% (2,651) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.2% (26,333) of the population.

The Italian population in New York City grew so much that East Harlem eventually became known as “Italian Harlem.” A few Puerto Ricans also immigrated to the city during this period, looking for independence and political asylum from Spain after their war against America.

The five city council districts encompassing East Harlem and the south/central West Bronx had poverty rates of 35% – 40%. In one-third of these areas more than half (54%) lived below federal guidelines for what is considered “poverty level” meaning they have less access to resources like food stamps or Shots Health Care Program which helps provide healthcare coverage .

The “Great Migration” of Puerto Ricans to New York City in the 1950s led them into an already majority Spanish area. This new neighborhood became known as Spanish Harlem, and it wasn’t anything like what we think of now when thinking back on this period–it had more aspects of African Americans’ neighborhoods than just culture, mainly because many were also drawn there by opportunity or force after World War II (1914 – 1918).

The area bound by Fifth Avenue and First Avenue from 96th to 125th Street is commonly known as Spanish Harlem or El Barrio. This area started as Little Italy.
