The Garment District, also known as the Garment Center, the Fashion District, or the Fashion Center, is a neighborhood located in the borough of Manhattan
The Garment District is an area of New York City that was once known as the Tenderloin. Today, it’s bordered by 34th and 41st streets on each side at 6 Avenue; though its heyday stretched into upper 40s with many businesses catering to unsavory activities like gambling and brothels who would come here looking for quick cash.
NYC Garment District is a hot spot for business, with both wholesale and retail customers. On weekdays the hours are from 9am to 6pm; however on Saturdays there can be up until 5 or 4:30 depending when you visit as some stores open earlier than others and close at different times due their religious observance (such as Shabbat).
When the Garment District opened in 1986, it was an offshoot of a textile company called Harbor Textile Waste Co., which manufactured and sold wiping cloths to various industries.

Manhattan’s lower east side has been the center of New York’s fashion industry for decades. The reason why this neighborhood is so famous and important in city history and it only takes 10 minutes from one end to another!
The City’s ban on homework was rescinded in 1984, and by the mid-1980s much manufacturing had left New York’s Garment District. However ironic it may sound though; this trend turned around when factory jobs returned to the Lower East Side or even worse—to Chinatown!
